12 common questions answered

What are the known NHTSA recalls for a 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV?
The NHTSA reports six recall entries affecting the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV: two for seat belts, two for windshield wipers, and two for the hybrid/electric propulsion system. These recalls cover rear outboard seat belt cutters, wiper linkage corrosion that can separate the wiper linkage, and a software issue that can cause the traction motor to shift to neutral and lose drive power. Nalley Toyota of Roswell can confirm and perform the required, free recall repairs — schedule service today.
How do I check if my 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV has an open recall?
You can check open recalls by entering your VIN on NHTSA.gov or by bringing your vehicle to Nalley Toyota of Roswell for a free VIN check. NHTSA lookup will list manufacturer recall numbers and descriptions; our service team will also verify open recalls and advise next steps at no charge. To confirm and book repairs, schedule service or call our service team; ask about service financing if you need payment flexibility.
How much does a 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV recall repair cost?
Recall repairs for the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV are free of charge when performed under the manufacturer recall program. Toyota covers parts and labor for these specific NHTSA-identified recalls, including protector installation for rear seat cushions, wiper linkage and diverter replacement, and Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Assembly software updates. Nalley Toyota of Roswell performs recall repairs with OEM parts and factory-trained technicians — service specials do not apply to recall work but we offer other maintenance promotions and service financing options.
Can I get my 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV recall fixed at an independent shop or do I need a dealer?
Manufacturer recall repairs should be completed at a certified franchise dealer to ensure free repairs and correct OEM fixes; independent shops cannot always perform recall-specific updates covered by the manufacturer. Certain recalls require OEM software updates or factory-installed protectors that only a franchise dealer with manufacturer tools and parts can guarantee. Nalley Toyota of Roswell offers factory-trained technicians, OEM diagnostics, and will perform free recall repairs — schedule appointment at our Roswell service center.
How long does a 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV recall repair take?
Repair times vary by recall: installer protector work or wiper diverter replacement can often be same-day, while software updates may require a short appointment — many repairs finish within a few hours. We’ll give an estimated turnaround when you schedule service; complex scheduling or parts availability can affect timing, but recall repairs are prioritized and scheduled promptly. Nalley Toyota of Roswell staff can arrange a quick VIN check and advise whether a loaner, shuttle, or after-hours pickup is available for your convenience.
Does an open recall affect my 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV's trade-in or resale value?
Yes — unresolved recalls can lower trade-in offers and may deter private buyers because many purchasers and dealers check NHTSA records before buying. Getting recall repairs completed at a certified dealer like Nalley Toyota of Roswell protects resale value, shows full factory service history, and reassures buyers the vehicle is safe and compliant. When you’re ready, visit our trade-in appraisal page to get an estimate after recalls are addressed: sell your car online.
Can I fail a state inspection because of an unresolved 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV recall?
While many state safety inspections do not explicitly fail a vehicle for an open recall, safety-related defects identified by recalls (like seat belt failures) can cause inspection failures or pose safety risks that inspectors will note. Ignoring recalls may also affect insurance claims or liability in an accident, so timely free repairs are strongly recommended. Contact Nalley Toyota of Roswell to schedule service and resolve open recalls quickly; we also offer service financing to make necessary work convenient.

Defect

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 27, 2008, to December 19, 2012 and 2012-2014 RAV4 EV vehicles manufactured July 24, 2012, to August 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, water may drip onto the joint that connects the wiper linkage to the wiper motor.

Consequence

Over time, the dripping water may cause corrosion and wear at the joint, potentially resulting in the separation of the wiper linkage. Once this occurs, the wipers would not function, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Action

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water diverter channel. In addition, a new wiper linkage with a wiper motor crank arm will be installed. The wiper linkage will have a protective cover over the wiper linkage joint to minimize water splash and a retainer ring to prevent the wiper arm from separating from the wiper motor. The recall is expected to begin by November 16, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service number at 1-800-331-4331.
